Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just gives up, opting for amusement as a coping mechanism.
But then, you remember that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a groan.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions

Awful Day Ever

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
